무늬목은 0.2mm ~ 2.0mm 정도의 두께로 얇게 깎아 낸 목재 자재를 통칭하는 말이며, 원목과 같은 효과를 내기 위해 MDF 파티클보드, 합판 철판 등에 붙여 사용합니다. 무늬목은 가공 방법, 두께, 결에 따라 분류할 수 있는데, 원목과 마찬가지로 그 종류도 많고 두께나 용도도 다양합니다. 두께 또는 건조 상태에 따라 습식무늬목과 건식무늬목, 가공 방법에 따라서는 천연무늬목과 집성무늬목 등으로 나눌 수 있습니다. 또한 나무의 수종, 나이테의 특성에 따라서 절삭 방법이 결정되며 결(무늬)이 다르게 표현되는데, 곧은결 혹은 무늬결 등으로 분류할 수 있습니다.
